Stories of Change

EDUCATION

FROM DROPPING OUT TO DREAMING AGAIN

In a small village outside Mwingi, Kitui County, Ann Mwende once sat at home watching her classmates walk to school. Her family could no longer afford fees or uniforms, and it seemed her dream of becoming a doctor would slip away. But through the support of MGF’s education initiative, she received school supplies, her fees were paid, and she returned to class with joy.

Today, she no longer worries about missing lessons. Instead, she confidently raises her hand in class, motivated by the knowledge that her future is still alive. Her story reminds us that when children are given the chance to learn, they rise beyond their circumstances and discover the power within themselves.

POVERTY & HUNGER

FROM EMPTY PLATES TO FULL HEARTS IN TURKANA

In the arid lands of Lodwar, Turkana County, many families survive on a single meal a day, if at all. Among them was Lemuye, a mother of three, who often went to bed listening to the cries of her hungry children. Her small kitchen fire remained cold most nights, and the thought of tomorrow brought more fear than hope.

When MGF launched a food support and sustainable farming project in her community, everything began to change. Lemuye’s family started receiving regular food rations, and she joined a women’s farming group where she learned how to grow vegetables using simple irrigation methods. Slowly, she regained her strength and dignity.

Today, her children eat at least two balanced meals a day. Even more inspiring, her small garden produces enough surplus to sell at the local market, giving her a source of income. For Lemuye, hunger is no longer the daily shadow it once was. Hope has returned to her home.

Health & nutrition

Healing hope in kisumu

In Manyatta, Kisumu County, little Kevin Omondi, a 7-year-old boy, often battled recurring illness. His mother, a casual laborer, struggled to afford hospital visits, and Kevin’s condition worsened with each passing month. The family felt helpless, watching as sickness stole away his childhood.

Through MGF’s health outreach program, Kevin received free medical check-ups, essential treatment, and nutrition support. Volunteers also taught his mother how to prepare balanced meals with locally available foods. Slowly, Kevin regained his energy. He now plays football with his friends, his laughter echoing across the village.

For his mother, the change is the restoration of hope. She no longer fears taking her child to hospital, and she proudly says her son has been given a second chance to be a child again.

youth empowerment

FROM joblessness to purpose in mathare

In the crowded alleys of Mathare, Nairobi, Brian, a 33-year-old, woke up each morning with little to look forward to. Despite finishing secondary school, jobs were scarce, and every rejection chipped away at his confidence. Many of his friends had already given up, some falling into crime or substance abuse. Brian feared he was heading down the same path.

Everything shifted when he joined MGF’s Youth Empowerment Program, which offered skills training in welding, carpentry, and entrepreneurship. At first, Brian doubted his ability, but the patient mentorship and practical sessions gave him a new sense of purpose. Within months, he was crafting metal doors and windows, and soon he opened a small workshop with two of his peers.

Today, Brian earns enough to support his siblings through school and has become a role model to other young men in Mathare. His story is proof that with opportunity and guidance, Kenyan youth can rise above unemployment and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
